Silicon social inventories increased slightly

SHANGHAI, Oct 25 (SMM) – Social inventories of silicon metal across Huangpu port, Kunming city, and Tianjin port continued to trend upward this week, albeit by a smaller increase of 1,000 mt from a week ago to 93,000 mt as of Friday October 25, showed SMM data.

Huangpu port contributed to the inventory decline, lowered by concentrated deliveries at the end of the month.

The SMM survey showed that inflow to port warehouses and outflow from Kunming warehouses shrank from last week, suggesting that spot trades were muted after southern producers agreed to the initiative to hold prices.

This is likely to slow the increase of silicon social inventories in the short term.

In the spot market, high-priced long-term contracted cargoes arrived at ports in the early stage with high cargo receiving costs. Domestic traders showed a strong willingness to prop up prices, driving continuous hikes in chromite quotations. However, downstream demand remained sluggish. Coupled with persistently high shipments and a notable inventory build-up, selling pressure intensified, slowing the upward momentum of spot chromite prices.
