SHANGHAI, Jun 19 (SMM) – Shipment of nickel ore at mines and production at nickel pig iron (NPI) mills in Konawe regency, south-east Sulawesi of Indonesia, has recovered since June 15 as the impact of floods waned, an SMM survey found on Wednesday June 19.
SMM learned that heavy rains and floods halted operation of eight submerged-arc furnaces at NPI plants in Konawe on June 13.
Logistics at NPI plants in Morowali were also disrupted but production continued. NPI producers and miners in other areas like South Sulawesi and Obi Island felt a limited impact from the flooding.
Indonesia is a major supplier of nickel ore and NPI to China, as well as the world's largest producer of stainless steel.
