[SMM data] since April, the copper stocks of the previous stock exchange and bonded warehouse have gone to the warehouse for 208000 tons of LME and returned to the warehouse again.

SMM June 14-according to SMM research, this Friday (June 14) copper stocks in Shanghai Free Trade Zone fell 16000 tons to 482000 tons compared with last Thursday (June 6). The bonded area fell by 106000 tons for six consecutive weeks, down from 6000 tons in the same period last year.

Since April, the stock of the previous period has dropped by 122000 tons, and the bonded warehouse has dropped by 86000 tons, with a total of 208000 tons in two and a half months. According to the investigation of SMM, the smelting enterprises have less maintenance and sufficient market supply in March after the festival, while the electrolytic copper output of smelting enterprises in April is 45000 tons less than that in March, and the output in May is 118000 tons lower than that in March, with a cumulative decrease of 153000 tons. Electrolytic copper goes to the warehouse, on the one hand, because the price drop copper enterprise order performance is better, promoted the electrolytic copper consumption, at the same time, the copper material enterprise has the reserve to increase the raw material inventory; on the other hand is the substitute scrap copper consumption, the fine scrap price difference narrowing causes the scrap copper consumption to be limited, the scrap copper enterprise supply also reduces accordingly, the market appears the refined copper substitution scrap copper consumption behavior. China is still in the inventory cycle, and the pace of inventory is expected to last until the end of June.

However, since May 26, LME has delivered a large number of positions twice in a row, twice as much as 65000 tons, although the total inventory is still lower than the same period last year, but based on the continuous macro disturbance this year, the global economy is slowing, and the inventory is still under great pressure on LME prices.

Since 2019, TC has been declining, and now there have been transactions on the market where non-CSPT team members are less than US $60 / ton. The cost of the smelter is gradually increasing pressure. Now the international copper mine is constantly disturbed, and the mining is already a fact. The market should beware of the continued decline of TC, the profits of smelting enterprises do not spend, so as to stop production.

【Flash | Novametal’s Molybdenum Benchmark Rises, but 316 Surcharge Transmission Remains Limited】
Novametal USA released its October 2026 raw-material surcharges for stainless steel cold-drawn wire. The molybdenum average increased 1.0% from US$33.2230/lb to US$33.5558/lb, equivalent to approximately US$73,244/t and US$73,978/t. However, nickel and chromium averages declined 1.9% and 1.2%, respectively. Consequently, the 316 alloy surcharge fell from US$1.94/lb to US$1.92/lb, while 316L declined from US$1.98/lb to US$1.97/lb. After the energy surcharge rose from US$0.10/lb to US$0.12/lb, the total 316 surcharge remained unchanged at US$2.04/lb and 316L edged up to US$2.09/lb. SMM analysis: weaker nickel and chromium partly offset higher molybdenum costs, limiting downstream price transmission.

【Flash | Eaton Steel Raises Molybdenum Surcharges for October】
Eaton Steel Bar Company released its October 2026 scrap and alloy surcharge schedule, raising the molybdenum component across all listed molybdenum-bearing grades. The moly surcharge for the 4000 series increased from US$9.49/cwt to US$9.77/cwt, equivalent to approximately US$209.22/t to US$215.39/t of steel. The 4600 series rose from US$15.18/cwt to US$15.64/cwt, while the 9260 grade increased from US$3.64/cwt to US$3.81/cwt. The gains ranged from about 3.0% to 4.7%. The scrap surcharge remained unchanged at US$14.50/cwt. SMM analysis: the October increase mainly came from alloy components, although the surcharge should not be treated as a direct molybdenum spot-price indicator.

KGHM and South32 launch US$725m Sierra Gorda expansion, lifting copper capacity 26%
KGHM and South32 have broken ground on a fourth grinding line at the Sierra Gorda copper-molybdenum mine in Chile's Atacama region. The US$725 million expansion runs for three years from January 2027, with completion by late 2029 and full output in H2 2030. Ore processing capacity rises 26%, from 131,000 tonnes per day to 165,000 tpd. Annual copper output is projected to climb from 165,000 tonnes in 2025 to 195,000 tonnes, with 6,000 tonnes of molybdenum, 58,000 ounces of gold and 1.7 million ounces of silver as by-products. The project creates over 900 direct jobs and is funded from operating cash flow and debt. Unit operating costs are expected to fall about 10%.
