China copper downstream activity grows slower than expected in Apr

PMI fell to 52.14 in Apr, down from 56.03 in Mar

SHANGHAI, May 5 (SMM) – Activity expansion across major copper downstream industries in China fell short of expectations in April, as end-market demand were not as strong as previously hoped.

SMM's purchasing managers' index (PMI) across China’s construction, power, electronics, transportation and home appliance sectors, major consumers of copper, released on April 30, fell to 52.14 for April, down from 56.03 in March.

A reading above 50 indicates expansion while one below 50 signals contraction. SMM had expected the index to rise to 57.58 in April.

The value-added tax cut for the manufacturing sector took effect from April. This drove end-users to rush to place orders in late March to chase VAT invoices at the rate of 16%, and hampered the growth of new orders in April. The sub-index for new orders dropped 7.02 month on month to 51.21.

Official data showed that realised investment in power grid projects declined 23.5% year on year in the first three months of 2019. However, orders from solar power, offshore wind power and ultra-high voltage projects remained high.

Production across copper downstream industries also grew slower last month, with the sub-index slipping 2.78 to stand at 53.15.

Large firms maintained stable and high-speed production while the government’s recent supportive policies that target small firms helped such plants gradually step up operation.

End-market consumption recovery failed to meet forecasts for a peak-season level in April, and this weighed on prices of futures. With limited buying interest among downstream buyers, spot copper markets saw poor trades last month, and spot spreads declined.

The sub-index for purchasing prices of raw materials across downstream copper sectors dipped 0.43 to stand at 48.5 in April.

Despite lower prices, moderate growth of new orders kept firms cautious about purchasing raw materials. The sub-index for raw material stocks fell 4.19 to 49.75 last month.

The PMIs for the construction, power, electronics, transportation and home appliance sectors all stood above 50 in April, as production held stable and as new orders saw a smaller increase.

Vedanta Plans $2.3 Billion Expansion in India and Saudi Arabia, and Advances Tuticorin Smelter Restart
Vedanta has unveiled a major investment plan, under which Vedanta Copper intends to invest $2.3 billion in India and Saudi Arabia over the next three to four years, targeting annual copper production of more than 1 million tonnes by 2030. The company aims to produce 500,000 tonnes annually in both India and Saudi Arabia, alongside existing production of 100,000 tonnes in Fujairah, UAE. Around $2 billion will be invested in Saudi copper mining, smelting and rod projects, with an investment decision on the proposed Saudi copper smelter expected this quarter. Vedanta is also seeking to restart its Tuticorin copper smelter in India, which has been closed since 2018. The company expects a court ruling within three months and, subject to approval, plans to invest $250 million in refurbishing the facility, targeting a restart within eight to nine months and annual copper output of 250,000 tonnes. Meanwhile, its Silvassa facility is operating at around 95% capacity, with annualised copper cathode production exceeding 245,000 tonnes.

London BTC flags copper and antimony at Nevada Black Star
London BTC Company Limited (LSE:BTC, OTCQB:VINZF) announced on 5 October 2026 initial on-site pXRF results from its Black Star gold-critical minerals project in Pershing County, Nevada. A maiden programme collected 69 rock-chip samples along a 2.5km corridor between the Western and Eastern targets. pXRF readings showed antimony up to 0.44% Sb, copper up to 30.0% Cu, bismuth up to 0.73% Bi and silver up to 811 ppm Ag, with the antimony-copper association appearing at both ends of the corridor. The signature mirrors a historical 1985 sample 120m south of the claims (>1% Sb, 2% Cu, 700 ppm Ag). Earlier due-diligence sampling returned up to 16.23 g/t gold and 50.5 g/t silver. Samples are now with MSALABS for laboratory assays, with full multi-element geochemistry including antimony, tungsten and copper to follow. Copper, as a by-product credit, adds strategic appeal under US critical-minerals policy, though results remain preliminary field readings.

Kantra extends Nugent copper-gold lode 70m below resource
Kantra Copper Limited (ASX:KAN) reported underground diamond drilling at its Kanmantoo copper mine in South Australia that extends the Nugent lode 70m below the 2025 Mineral Resource Estimate and 370m beneath the current 950 Level stopping horizon. Hole 26KVUG0949 returned 70m at 1.18% copper and 0.24g/t gold from 507m, including 38m at 1.46% copper and 0.18g/t gold. Nugent, on the deposit's south-western edge, carries generally higher gold grades. By end-August 2026 the company had completed 38,535m of underground diamond drilling, including 12,024m at Nugent, and expects a resource update incorporating about 80,000m of drilling in late October. Kanmantoo is an operating mine that produced 3,170t of copper in the June 2026 quarter; 2026 guidance is 12,750-14,000t of copper, and the deep extension offers low-capital growth from existing infrastructure.
