SMM3, 4 March-Sherritt International (Sherritt International), a global leader in nickel-cobalt mining and refining at the laterite mine, announced on March 1 that its smelter at (Fort Saskatchewan), Saskatcher Winburg, Alberta, has been in operation since 1954. Nickel production has reached 3 billion pounds, reaching the production milestone.

The Saskatchewan Fort Saskatchewan smelter processes mixed sulfides produced by Moa Joint Venture to produce massive and powdered grade I nickel. The joint venture was founded in 1994 and Sherritt holds a 50 per cent partnership interest. Primary nickel is the purest form of nickel and is particularly suitable for applications that require high purity, such as electric vehicle batteries.

In 2018, the Moa joint venture produced 30708 tons of finished nickel (100 per cent purity) and 3234 tons of cobalt (100 per cent purity). In 2019, the Moa joint venture is expected to produce 3.1 to 33000 tons of finished nickel (100 per cent purity) and 3300 to 3,600 tons of finished cobalt (100 per cent purity).

In 2018, Ambatovy Joint Venture produced 33185 tons of finished nickel (100 per cent purity) and 2852 tons of finished cobalt (100 per cent purity). In 2019, the Ambatovy joint venture is expected to produce 4-45000 tons of finished nickel (100 per cent purity) and 3500 to 4000 tons of finished cobalt (100 per cent purity).

Production in the fourth quarter of 2018: Sherritt:Moa JV joint venture produced 4294 tons of nickel and 428 tons of cobalt in the fourth quarter of 2018

High-Grade NPI Smelter Profits Squeezed as Ore Prices Rise and Sales Prices Dip
[SMM Nickel Flash] Based on nickel ore prices from 25 days ago, smelter profits for high-grade NPI remained high this week. However, from the current raw material side, ore prices from both the Philippines and Indonesia increased, while auxiliary material prices saw a slight pullback, leading to an increase in the cash cost of producing high-grade NPI from spot ore. At the same time, high-grade NPI prices experienced some pullback, making it difficult for smelter profits to see sustained improvement.

[SMM Nickel Flash] This week, due to a sharp decline in futures triggering arbitrage selling, high-grade NPI prices fell significantly. However, after the selling activity subsided, upstream quotations and the market center gradually returned to normal levels, supported by cost factors. Looking ahead, as the Chinese New Year holiday approaches, market activity is expected to remain subdued, and high-grade NPI prices are projected to hover at highs with limited fluctuations.
