All ferronickel, stainless steel plants stopped production as of Sep 15. Resumption will depend on weather conditions

SHANGHAI, Sep 17 (SMM) – All ferronickel and stainless steel plants in Yangjiang city of Guangdong province stopped production as of Saturday September 15, as Typhoon Mangkhut battered the southern coast of China on September 16.

Power was cut and all personnel was evacuated across those plants.

The city produced 3,400 mt, in metal content, of nickel pig iron (NPI) in August, accounting for 9% of China’s output that month. Production of #300 stainless steel stood at 90,000 mt in the city last month, accounting for 8% of the output across China.

Separately, a nickel smelter in Guangxi suspended production of refined nickel and nickel sulphate on September 16, citing the impact of Typhoon Mangkhut. An estimated 50 mt of nickel output will be affected, SMM learned.
