Tangshan, China’s top steelmaking city in the north, plans to halve the number of the steel producers across the region by 2020, according to local media reports on July 2.
The city aims to keep less than 30 steel companies by 2020 and cut it further to around 25 by 2025, Tangshan Labour Daily recently reported. By 2020, the city aims to eliminate blast furnaces of below 1,000 m3, converters of below 100 mt and sintering machines of below 180 m3. It also aims to cut down on blast furnaces of below 1,500 m3 and converters of below 150 mt.
Tangshan has an effective steelmaking capacity of 105.34 million mt, accounting for 10.6% of China’s total, SMM estimates.
