A high-grade NPI producer in north China resumed operation after a week-long suspension on environmental review

SHANGHAI, Jun 27 (SMM) – A high-grade nickel pig iron (NPI) producer in north China resumed operation as of Wednesday June 27 after a week-long suspension on environmental review by the central government, SMM learned.

Some 2,100 mt of production was affected, which is equivalent to just over 180 mt in nickel content.

The plant produced 9,000 mt of high-grade NPI in May, accounting for nearly 3% of China's total production last month.

[SMM Nickel Flash] The SMM average price of 10-12% high-grade NPI fell 17.2 yuan/mtu WoW to 1,035.8 yuan/mtu (ex-factory, tax included), while the Indonesia NPI FOB index average price dropped 2.06 $/mtu WoW to 131.2 $/mtu. At the beginning of the week, futures hit limit-down, and nickel prices fell sharply WoW, driving the emergence of arbitrage supplies sold at low prices, leading to a significant decline in high-grade NPI prices.
