Environmental probe in Inner Mongolia to affect silicon-manganese alloy output

As the environmental inspection team from the central government settled in Baotou on Monday May 21, production of silicon-manganese alloy and ferrosilicon alloy is likely to be affected

SHANGHAI, May 21 (SMM) – As the environmental inspection team from the central government settled in Baotou on Monday May 21, production of silicon-manganese alloy and ferrosilicon alloy is likely to be affected as plants shut down from Monday in Shiguai industrial park in Baotou city of Inner Mongolia, SMM learned.

Though it was estimated that several hundred mt of silicon-manganese alloy output will be affected daily in Baotou city, inspections will extend to other areas of Inner Mongolia and weigh on market sentiment. Production will be suspended at plants that fail to undergo environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedures, SMM learned. China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment is likely to launch a new round of environmental probes across the country this year.

SMM assessed silicon-manganese alloy in north China's market at 7,400 yuan/mt, ex-works on acceptance, on Monday, flat from last week.

Manganese-based Battery Materials: Differentiated Trends, Cost-Supported Stability
This week, China’s domestic manganese-based battery materials market has shown a differentiated operation trend. The price of battery-grade manganese tetroxide has slightly declined, the price of electrolytic manganese dioxide has slightly increased, and lithium manganate has maintained a weak balance of supply and demand.

Manganese Sulfate: Sustained Rally on Cost Support & Firm Demand
In contrast to the typical price declines seen during the traditional spring festival low season from January to February in previous years, China’s domestic manganese sulfate market has recently staged an independent rally of “strong performance amid the off-season”, with prices rising steadily along the way.

Silicon metal production to recover in March after falling in February
Silicon metal production in February was 275,700 mt, down 26.6% MoM and 5% YoY. In terms of daily output, the average daily production in February decreased by about 19% MoM from January. It is projected that silicon metal production in March will increase to over 340,000 mt MoM, with an average daily production increase of approximately 13% MoM.
