As part of Guangdong province's efforts to combat air pollution, cities in the province will require steel plants to implement denitrification in their sintering systems by the end of June

SHANGHAI, May 11 (SMM) – As part of Guangdong province's efforts to combat air pollution, cities in the province will require steel plants to implement denitrification in their sintering systems by the end of June. City officials will also focus on eliminating local, substandard industrial companies and outdated capacity by the end of June, according to an action plan released by the provincial environmental protection authority.

The effort targets highly polluting industries as well as those that release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions such as the steel, cement, glass, ceramics, paper, and non-ferrous metals industries. Companies that fail to meet local standards on energy consumption and environmental protection will be shut down or rectified.

Denitrification is the removal of nitrogen or nitrogen compounds. VOCs are carbon-containing chemical compounds that evaporate at room temperature. Some VOCs react with nitrogen oxides under sunlight to form ozone, a precursor of smog.

Steel mills in cities such as Zhuhai, Shaoguan, Zhanjiang, Yangjiang, and Jieyang were required to formulate schemes for commissioning denitrification facilities in sintering systems. They will have to take appropriate action before the end of this year.
