Published: Jan 19, 2018 14:03
Premiums of non-original briquette for foreign trade are $140-150/mt while premiums of original briquette traded higher at $300/mt due to tight supply.

SHANGHAI, Jan 19 (SMM)-Premiums of non-original briquette for foreign trade are $140-150/mt while premiums of original briquette traded higher at $300/mt due to tight supply. In China, spot briquette on the Wuxi Stainless Steel Market saw discounts of 700 yuan/mt while Russian nickel saw discounts of 200 yuan/mt.

China’s domestic steel mills and nickel sulfate plants are leaning towards nickel briquette after import tariffs of Russian nickel rose 1% to 2%. Chinese companies use mainly Russian nickel due to trade restrictions. Globally, most briquette is from Australia and Madagascar.

[SMM Stainless Steel Flash] Ferroglobe Threatens SA Smelter Shutdown Amid Power Cost Crisis
Ferroglobe’s South African unit has warned it may halt its remaining furnace operations unless it receives electricity tariff relief by Wednesday. The company, which produces ferrosilicon crucial for steel and stainless steel production, cited a 900% surge in electricity prices since 2007, which now accounts for over half of its total production costs. With an impending 9% Eskom tariff hike, continued operations are deemed financially unviable. Industry leaders highlighted a growing disparity: while government tariff relief talks have prioritized ferrochrome producers, other alloy smelters are left exposed. If a workable tariff (estimated at 62c/kWh) is not granted, Ferroglobe will initiate widespread retrenchments in early April and may shift production entirely out of the country.
