NPI plant maintenance to affect China’s output

A major nickel pig iron (NPI) producer in East China has arranged maintenance for its furnaces, which is estimated to last for at least one month, sources told SMM.

SHANGHAI, Dec 28 (SMM)－ A major nickel pig iron (NPI) producer in East China has arranged maintenance for its furnaces, which is estimated to last for at least one month, sources told SMM.

Two furnaces of 33000 Kva have already stopped for maintenance while more are scheduled to follow, according to the sources.

In November, output of the NPI producer accounted for 15% of China’s total production, and 25% of China’s high-grade NPI production. The maintenance is likely to see 30% of the plant’s output affected.

[SMM Nickel Flash] The SMM average price of 10-12% high-grade NPI fell 17.2 yuan/mtu WoW to 1,035.8 yuan/mtu (ex-factory, tax included), while the Indonesia NPI FOB index average price dropped 2.06 $/mtu WoW to 131.2 $/mtu. At the beginning of the week, futures hit limit-down, and nickel prices fell sharply WoW, driving the emergence of arbitrage supplies sold at low prices, leading to a significant decline in high-grade NPI prices.
