Vale to cut down nickel output in future 5 years, mainly in Canada

Vale is going to cut down its nickel output in future 5 years, said Vale on an annual investors’ dcay at COMEX.

SHANGHAI, Dec.8 (SMM)-Vale is going to cut down its nickel output in future 5 years, said Vale on an annual investors’ day at COMEX.

The estimated nickel output of Vale in 2018 is 263,000 tons, dropping 8% on yearly basis. The company will produce 262,000, 268,000, 266,000 and 280,000 tons nickel from 2019-2022, which is reduced by 17.1%,11%,11.9% and 7.0% respectively. The main region of declining output is in Canada due to its previous weak market performance.

Duplex 2209 and super-duplex 2509/2594/2507 eased to $8.71/lb and $9.02/lb. ERNiCrMo-3 nickel-alloy solid wire fell from $15.53/lb to $13.28/lb. SMM analysis: Mo-bearing welding-consumable surcharges broadly declined QoQ, but the combined charges also reflect nickel, chromium and tariff costs and are not molybdenum spot prices.

PT Metal Smeltindo Selaras (MSS), a China-invested nickel smelter in Morowali, Central Sulawesi, is facing a PKPU petition filed by nickel mining and trading company PT Mineral Maju Sejahtera. The case was registered at the Central Jakarta Commercial Court on September 29, 2026, with the first hearing scheduled for October 8. MSS operates an RKEF smelter with eight furnaces and targeted feronickel capacity of around 600,000 mt/y. No production suspension has been confirmed.
