As per SMM research, due to recent weak NPI price, domestic NPI plants are suppressed in profits.

SHANGHAI, Dec.6 (SMM)－As per SMM research, due to recent weak NPI price, domestic NPI plants are suppressed in profits.

One NPI plant in South China has gone into maintenance recently which will affect 1,000 tons of output. This translates to 100-150 tons of nickel.

SMM data showed that China's refined zinc output stood at 508,900 mt in August, down 1.22% on the month and 0.04% on the year. Output from January to August was 4.04 million mt, a year-on-year increase of 4.47%. Alloy output at domestic refined zinc smelters in SMM’s survey sample registered 75,500 mt in August, up 80 mt on the month.

Total import volume of NPI in March 2021 was 334,000 mt. Imports from Indonesia stood at 278,000 mt, an increase of 18.38% month-on-month but a year-on-year decrease of 1.9%. NPI and stainless steel capacity in Indonesia has commissioned simultaneously, and the growth in exports of NPI to China should be limited in the short term;

China NPI output rose 15.2% in May after 5 months of decline

China’s production of NPI increased in May after five consecutive months of decline since November 2019, driven by the resumption and ramping-up production at major producers of high-grade NPI. SMM data showed that China’s NPI output rose 15.15% on the month to 44,200 mt in Ni content in May. On a yearly basis, the NPI output was 7.49% lower in May.
