SHANGHAI, Jul. 20 (SMM) – Global primary aluminum market was in a deficit of 735,000 tonnes during January-May, versus 1.1 million tonnes for the whole of 2016, according to latest data from World Bureau of Metal Statistics (WBMS). 

SMM Data: China Aluminum Output Grows in June

Primary aluminum output worldwide grew 1.37 million tonnes or 5.9% year-on-year during January-May. Output in China was estimated at 13.86 million tonnes, accounting for 56% of global total. Primary aluminum demand worldwide rose 1.61 million tonnes year-on-year to 25.34 million tonnes in the same period. 

SMM: China Aluminum Stocks Hit Over 4-Year High

In May, global primary aluminum output was 5.04 million tonnes, while consumption was 5.08 million tonnes.

The Aluminum Association of India (AAI) has urged the government to raise import duties, introduce aluminum scrap quality standards and implement grade-based HSN codes to curb low-quality scrap imports. AAI said India's aluminum imports reached a record 3.479 million tonnes in FY26, with aluminum scrap imports costing over INR 402 billion, posing risks to domestic investment, recycling development and the country's aluminum industry.
