Alumina suppliers in Australia and buyers in China have entered a deadlock after Alcoa announced to restart aluminum smelter in Indiana, SMM learned.

SHANGHAI, Jul. 17 (SMM) – Alumina suppliers in Australia and buyers in China have entered a deadlock after Alcoa announced to restart aluminum smelter in Indiana, SMM learned.

Chalco Raises Aluminum Prices Further After Dramatic Hike

Despite declines in Chinese alumina market, Australian suppliers held FOB price firm at $ 307/tonne out of optimism that restart of Alcoa’s smelter would boost alumina prices.

Chinese buyers, on the other hand, could not accept current prices, thus leaving trading virtually stagnant.

TOMRA Recycling has expanded the application of its AUTOSORT™ PULSE Dynamic LIBS sorting system beyond aluminium alloy separation to include stainless steel, heavy metals, magnesium and incinerator bottom ash (IBA). The system can sort 6xxx aluminium alloys, stainless steel grades such as 304 and 316, as well as copper, brass and zinc, enabling recyclers to process multiple material streams with one platform while improving recovery efficiency and operational flexibility.

[SMM Aluminum Flash News] India's Aluminum Association Urges Higher Tariffs and Stricter Scrap Import Standards
The Aluminum Association of India (AAI) has urged the government to raise import duties, introduce aluminum scrap quality standards and implement grade-based HSN codes to curb low-quality scrap imports. AAI said India's aluminum imports reached a record 3.479 million tonnes in FY26, with aluminum scrap imports costing over INR 402 billion, posing risks to domestic investment, recycling development and the country's aluminum industry.
