China Copper Concentrate Imports down 20% YoY in May 2017, SMM Reports

China imported 1.15 million tonnes of copper ores and concentrates in May, down 20% YoY and 15.4% MoM.

SHANGHAI, Jun. 8 (SMM) – According to China Customs, China imported 1.15 million tonnes of copper ores and concentrates in May, down 20% YoY and 15.4% MoM.

Large amounts of domestic copper smelters conducted maintenance in the month, reducing raw material imports.

Moreover, strikes at copper mines, including Escondida copper mine, one of major suppliers, also slashed copper concentrate imports in the month. In other news, Chile produced 378,000 tonnes of copper in March 2017, reporting a 23.1% yearly decline led by strike.
