(Kitco News) - Gold’s more than $300 premium over platinum is another example that fear and uncertainty is driving demand in the marketplace, according to the latest report from OptionsXpress.

Mike Zarembski, senior commodity analyst at the brokerage firm, noted that the gold:platinum ratio is trading near the top of its 12-month range, which is a good indication that there is a strong fear sentiment among investors right now.

“One potential way that some traders look for clues as to the strength of the global economy is to compare the performance of Gold versus some of the more industrial of the precious metals, such as Platinum,” he said. “The theory here is that during times of strong global growth, the demand for industrial commodities such as platinum will rise, while a commodity such as Gold, which has taken on the reputation as a ‘safe haven’ asset will see demand lag. Conversely, during times of uncertainty, the demand for Gold should rise versus that for industrial commodities.”

The sentiment has weakened somewhat Wednesday as gold prices have dropped from recent five-month highs. June Comex gold futures last traded at $1,279.30 an ounce, down more than 1% on the day. At the same time, July platinum futures last traded at $968 an ounce, also down more than 1% on the day.

While gold’s near-term failure to break resistance at $1,300 could create further short-term weakness as funds liquidate long gold positions, Zarembski said that he is watching technical momentum.

“It appears that the short-term 20-day MA [moving average] is preparing to cross above the long-term 200-day MA. This cross over should it occur would generally be viewed as a bullish technical signal, which could spur fresh buying by trend following systems traders,” he said.

Platinum-Group Metals See Sharp Decline Amid Inflation, CPI; Rhodium Drops, Iridium Rises, Ruthenium Steady
SMM News, October 15: Driven by multiple factors including rising inflation figures and higher‑than‑expected CPI readings, platinum‑group metals posted an overall sharp price decline. Sub‑segments within platinum‑group metals showed divergent performances. Rhodium saw a minor drop of around RMB 25 per gram today, while iridium kept climbing and tested the RMB 2,200‑per‑gram level. Ruthenium has remained strong recently; however, weighed down by shifting market sentiment from bullish to bearish across precious metals amid rate‑hike expectations, ruthenium prices held steady on poor trading volumes.

CPI Data Triggers Macro Pressure; Platinum and Palladium Futures Plunge After Holiday While Spot Market Trading Is Active [SMM Platinum and Palladium Weekly Review]
This week (Oct. 8–15), platinum and palladium first fell to catch up with losses before rebounding, then slumped again after US September CPI came in above expectations. The week ended with sharp declines, with palladium falling significantly more than platinum. The most-traded PT2612 contract dropped 6.85% on the week to close at 391.4 yuan per gram, while the most-traded PD2612 contract fell 9.84% to close at 263.45 yuan per gram. Trading activity in the spot market was relatively brisk, with premiums for both platinum and palladium moving to parity with the most-traded contracts. Sticky inflation has fueled expectations of further rate hikes, weighing on valuations. Prices are likely to consolidate at lows in the near term. Going forward, the market will focus on Warsh's speech on Oct. 15, the Fed's policy meeting at month-end, and geopolitical developments.

Southern Palladium lifts Bengwenyama study value to US$1.96 billion
[SMM PGM Flash] Southern Palladium released an updated prefeasibility study on 13 October for its 70%-owned Bengwenyama PGM-chrome project in South Africa. The study lifts modelled post-tax net present value, at an 8% real discount rate and on a 100% project basis, to US$1.96 billion from US$857 million in its July 2025 optimised study. It projects a 39.1% internal rate of return and a US$329 million peak funding requirement, up from US$279 million. No new ore reserve was declared. The increase reflects earlier metallurgical work, a revised plant design and stronger commodity-price assumptions, rather than new mined output. The study assumes 85.6% chromite recovery and envisages about one million tonnes a year of chrome concentrate at full Stage 2 output. About 30% of its life-of-mine tonnes are inferred resources. The definitive feasibility study and project funding remain outstanding, so the economic figures remain forecasts.
