US Raw Steel production slips to 1,699,000 net tons

United States domestic raw steel production slipped by 0.4% year-on-year to 1,699,000 net tons in the week ended February 20.

NEW YORK (Scrap Register): United States domestic raw steel production slipped by 0.4% year-on-year to 1,699,000 net tons in the week ended February 20, while the capability utilization rate was 72.7 percent, as per the latest figures from the the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

Production was 1,705,000 net tons in the week ended February 20, 2015 while the capability utilization then was 72.4 percent. 

Production for the week ended February 20, 2016 is down 0.2 percent from the previous week ended February 13, 2016 when production was 1,703,000 net tons and the rate of capability utilization was 72.8 percent.

Adjusted year-to-date production through February 20, 2016 was 13,100,000 net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 69.2 percent. 

That is down 7.4 percent from the 14,140,000 net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 74.4 percent.

At the beginning of the week, futures hit limit-down, and nickel prices fell sharply WoW, driving the emergence of arbitrage supplies sold at low prices, leading to a significant decline in high-grade NPI prices.
