LOS ANGELES (Scrap Monster): The Arcata Resource Recovery Center (ARRC) will close its doors by end-January. The decision was announced by Rick Powell, general manager of Eel River Resource Recovery (ERRR) during the monthly meeting of Humboldt Waste Management Authority (HWMA). Powell cited lack of participation by residents as the main cause for shuttering of the facility.

According to Powell, the overseas demand for recycled commodities has fallen sharply during recent months. The economic slowdown in China has impacted worldwide recycling market. Plastic recycling is hit hard by unprecedented drop in oil prices, he noted. The facility was kept open amidst adverse market conditions with the hope that customer counts might improve. However, dropping customer participation rates have ultimately forced them to close the facility for good, Powell added.

Customers using the ARRC recycling collection center have been informed about the proposed closure of the facility. Upon closure of the facility, Arcata residents will have to drive to Humboldt Sanitation in McKinleyville, the ERRR Samoa Processing Facility or HWMA’s Eureka Recycling Center to drop off their recyclables.

The ARRC was more than a recycling center and drop off for bottles and cans. Residents were also able to recycle glass, and plastic bottles, tin and aluminum cans, news paper and magazines, Office Paper, Used motor oil, Sharps, and Automotive Batteries, e-waste and scrap metal.
