ALBANY (Scrap Monster): According to Mayor Anne E. McCaffrey, the City of Lockport is on the lookout for a new location to store the electronic waste dropped off by residents. She clarified that another city-owned location will be earmarked towards electronics drop-offs.

As per current policy, residents are allowed to dispose their used electronics at the rear of Harrison Place from 10 AM until noon on the first and third Saturdays of every month. Dropping waste during any other time is considered illegal. However, residents have been dropping off their unwanted electronics during site off-hours. Piles of televisions were found stacked behind the building, city officials noted.

Consequently, the city had decided last week to install a security camera system at the South Street side of the building in order to monitor the activities taking place behind Harrison Place. Although installation of camera was meant to catch people illegally dumping waste at the site, no camera has been installed until now.

According to city representatives, the electronics being stored in the location are being broken for smaller electronic items. This is likely to cause significant financial loss to the city as Sunnking-the electronics recycling contractor charges 35 cents per pound for removing broken devices, more than three times the charges for unbroken devices. In addition, increased number of thefts has also been reported from the site.

By moving the drop-off facility to a new location, the city officials also aim to curtail illegal dumping of electronic items.
