[Copper Price] Is Copper Price Overshooting on Downside? SMM Interviews

Is the red metal overshooting on the downside? Will its outlook turn less pessimistic for the long run?

SHANGHAI, Jun. 17 (SMM) – Copper price has posted sharp falls, and the SHFE copper lost 4.64% following a five-day losing streak. Is the red metal overshooting on the downside? Will its outlook turn less pessimistic for the long run?

“Some negative factors may have been priced in and it is possible that price fall in H2 can be not as sharp as we had expected, but outlook is still bearish overall,” said analyst from Everbright Futures told SMM.

Chief analyst of COFCO Futures agreed, saying that although downward room may be limited on the horizon following the plunge, weak market fundamentals mean prospect for the market in H2 should remain pessimistic.

That said, a few analysts do consider the recent price decline somewhat overdone and note that there are still uncertainties surrounding long-term price outlook.

He revealed, "Rusal is currently cooperating with Indonesian companies to build the relevant facilities." In late July, Russian Ambassador to Indonesia Sergey Tolchenov stated in an interview that Russia and Indonesia had achieved significant results in aluminum industry cooperation—Rusal had increased its finished product shipments to the Indonesian market. Back in 2014, Rusal and Indonesia's PT Arbaya Energi signed a memorandum of understanding to mine bauxite and produce alumina in the country.

Local Refineries Boost August Petroleum Coke Supply; State-Owned Refiners Limit September Growth [SMM Analysis]
Overall, China's total petroleum coke production in September will continue its MoM rebound. Supported by incremental supply from independent refiners, the nationwide YoY supply decline is expected to narrow further, but dragged down by maintenance at state-owned refiners, a YoY turnaround to positive growth remains difficult to achieve, with the overall pace of supply recovery mild and weak.
