Ferrous scrap export by EU-28 countries declined sharply

The scrap exports by EU-28 countries during the initial three months of current year dropped sharply, as per the latest EU trade statistics released yesterday.

CANTERBURY (Scrap Monster): The scrap exports by EU-28 countries during the initial three months of current year dropped sharply, as per the latest EU trade statistics released yesterday. According to trade data, the EU-28 nations’ scrap exports totaled 3,525,496 tons during the three-month period. The exports were down by 10.3% when compared with those during the corresponding three-month period last year.

The largest importer of ferrous scrap from EU-28 region was Turkey. The scrap imports by Turkey totaled 2,136,914 tons, constituting nearly 60.6% of the total scrap exports by EU-28 nations during this period. The scrap exports to Turkey dropped by 4.9% over the previous year.

In second place was Egypt with 564,934 tons. The exports to Egypt plunged by nearly 70% when compared with the exports during Jan-Mar ‘14. The third largest export destination for EU-28 countries’ scrap was India with 310,466 tons. The exports to India increased by nearly 20% 625% during the three-month period. The top three destinations accounted for 77.7% of the total EU-28 nations’ export. The other major export destinations of EU-28 nations were: USA (178,374 tons, down 58.6%), Switzerland (128,067 tons, down 8.8%) and China (88,129 tons, down 15.6%).

The scrap exports by the region during the month of March 2015 alone totaled 1,040,453 tons. This is marginally higher when compared with the exports during the previous month. The EU-28 nations’ ferrous scrap exports had totaled 1,014,524 tons during February this year. Turkey was the largest importer during the month with 525,253 tons. In second place was India (166,766 tons), followed by Pakistan (108,355 tons). The other major importers during the month were Morocco (50,883 tons), Switzerland (46,039 tons) and China (30,882 tons).
