UNITED STATES July 11 2014 11:35 AM

NEW YORK (Scrap Register): United States hot rolled cold (HRC) steel prices dropped by $5 a short ton or 0.7% week-on-week to $673 a short ton in the week ended July 04th this year, as per the latest figures released by the The Steel Index (TSI).

In the US, activity in steel markets picked up although it was a shorter working week with the July 4th holiday.

US Steel announced a $25 a short ton price hike for all flat steel products on Monday.

Despite this, spot HRC prices continued to fall as buyers secured orders largely between $655-670 a short ton FOB Midwest mill.

Whilst it appears the move may be aimed at stabilising market prices, some upside may be possible if other producers follow suit.
