Chinalco Mining Corporation International stopped mining operations at its Toromocho copper project in Peru for an alleged non-compliance with environmental laws relating to water discharges.

SHANGHAI, Mar. 31 (SMM) – Chinalco Mining Corporation International stopped mining operations at its Toromocho copper project in Peru for an alleged non-compliance with environmental laws relating to water discharges.

Chinalco Mining’s local subsidiary Minera Chinalco Peru S.A. was notified to stop its commissioning work until the matter is resolved by the Peruvian Ministry of Environment on Mar. 28, it told Hong Kong Stock Exchange today.

As previously announced, the commissioning of the Toromocho copper project occurred on Dec. 10, 2013 and the reaching of full production capacity was scheduled for the third quarter of 2014, it said.

Chinalco Mining last week announced widening losses in 2013 with the Toromocho project still under development and not generating revenue.
