SHANGHAI, Apr. 17 (SMM) -
Overseas Market:
High-grade manganese ore is in tight supply in Port Elizabeth due to traffic congestion in South Africa on Tuesday. Chinese traders and producers are willing to pay higher prices. SMM notes that CIF prices for manganese ore (Mn 44%) were USD 5.65/mtu, up 5 cents/mtu. In contrast, prices for South Africa mixed carbonate manganese ore at Chinese ports were little affected due to ample supply. The traffic jam may provide some support to prices of spot manganese ore from South Africa.
Domestic market:
Spot manganese ore markets in China have remained sluggish, with traded prices stagnant. SMM survey found that traders at ports are not considering lowering prices. This is mainly because price cuts will not stoke buying interest given the current depressed manganese alloy markets. Besides, selling all the goods at hand at discounts will undermine their future operations. Traders were reluctant to import against high CIF prices.
Transactions:
With less goods arriving, manganese ore inventories at ports continued to fall. Inquiries for medium-iron manganese ore and Brazilian goods were active in northern ports, but transaction volumes were low due to short supply.
