Gabonreview reported that BHP Billiton, the world’s biggest manganese ore producer, will withdraw from the Gabon market.

SHANGHAI, Apr. 2 (SMM) -

Domestic market:
Spot manganese ore markets at ports were dominated by strong wait-and-see sentiment. Steel producers’ bid prices for manganese alloy in April were down RMB 150-250/mt from March. SMM’s surveys found that traders have remained cautious about importing amid rising CIF prices for manganese ore.

Transactions:
Trading volumes of South Africa mixed carbonate manganese ore remained comparatively high, but traded prices varied greatly, due mainly to growing arrivals in March. Prices for manganese ore (medium Fe) from South Africa and Australia, on the other hand, are firm at the moment due to tight supplies.

China’s finished steel inventories are trending down. Although prices for five major finished steel remain weak, construction on infrastructure and fixed asset investment projects will progressively start following the Chinese Qingming holiday, and this will boost demand for finished steel. Besides, power tariff will drop with the onset of rainy season in south China, which will help reduce production costs by RMB 100/mt for manganese alloy producers. Some small and medium alloy producers will high intention of resuming production by then, allowing manganese ore prices to hold stable.
