SHANGHAI, Mar. 19 (SMM) -
Domestic market:
Prices of five major steel products were hiked by RMB 20-90/mt. Market players believe the move is more likely the result of normal price correction following continuous declines since the Chinese New Year rather than reflection of growing demand downstream. The average daily crude steel output was 2.08 million mt in early March this year, the highest level since statistics from China Steel Association are available. Steadily rising crude steel output will boost demand for manganese alloy. However, producers surveyed by SMM believe manganese alloy prices will not rise anytime soon. Prices of imported manganese ore at ports were weak. Price decline in South African mixed carbonate manganese ore was more pronounced due to large arrivals and current unusually high prices. .
Prices of spot manganese ore at ports were generally weak. Overseas suppliers raised prices by limiting volumes of goods for sale, unfavorable for Chinese traders and manganese alloy producers. Domestic buyers may as well substitute other classes of manganese ore for mainstream ore for the time being.
