SHANGHAI, Jun. 15 (SMM) – SMM conducted a survey and found that mainstream traded prices for prebaked anode were down RMB 50-100/mt in early June 2011, and this was the biggest price declines since March 2011. Ex-works prices (including tax) for prebaked anode are now as follows: RMB 3,800-4,000/mt in central China; RMB 3,850-4,150/mt in Eastern China; RMB 3,900-4,200/mt in northwestern areas; and RMB 3,900-4,200/mt in southwestern areas.

According to SMM survey, lower prebaked anode prices were due mainly to falling prices of petroleum coke. Over the recent two weeks, mainstream prices for medium-sulfur petroleum coke were down by near RMB 100/mt; prices for low-sulfur petroleum coke were down RMB 23/mt last week. Coupled with falling high-sulfur petroleum coke prices in early May, prices in the whole petroleum coke market are weak.

Petroleum coke is the major raw material of prebaked anode, and accounts for near 80% of the latter’s production cost. At present, transactions for petroleum coke are weak, and supply is increasing in some areas. Amid tightening domestic bank credit, carbon producers are facing low cash flow, and many prebaked anode producers express to purchase on an as-needed basis.
