Zambian state power utility Zambia Electricity Supply Corp., or Zesco, has signed a $285 million loan with Industrial & Commercial Bank of China Ltd. (1398.HK) to build a power line linking southern and eastern Africa, Zambia's Daily Mail newspaper reported Tuesday.
The 684-kilometer power line will link Zambia's Central province with Tanzania and Kenya, and at least two substations will be built, with construction slated to state by October, the state-owned daily said, citing Minister of Energy and Water Development Kenneth Konga.
Zambia, Africa's largest copper producer, is investing in various power projects as it seeks to meet rising electricity demand, mainly from its copper mining sector.
