Nov. 19 -- Avalon Rare Metals Inc has agreed an extension of its special licence to evaluate the potential development of historical tin resources at the East Kemptville property in Nova Scotia. East Kemptville was Canada’s only major tin mine, a large low-grade open pit operation owned by Rio Algom producing some 4,000 tpy up to its closure in 1991. Avalon acquired mineral title to the property in 2005, although Rio Algom (now part of the giant BHP Billiton group) retains surface rights to the property. Avalon has been granted a 12 month extension of its obligation to spend $1.5 million on exploration and a preliminary economic analysis.
A planned work programme awaits agreement by the Nova Scotia government and BHPB. Meanwhile Avalon has spent some $500,000 this year on exploration of its 100% owned Ikes Ridge property which is adjacent to the East Kemptville site.
