SHANGHAI, Nov. 9 (SMM) – China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection published the 2010 annual report on control of motor vehicle pollution emission, revealing the pollution emission amount from motor vehicles reached 51.433 million mt in 2009 in China. Motor vehicles’ emission becomes one main source of air pollution in China’s mid-to-large cities.
According to one person familiar with the matter, the implementation of stringent standards for motor vehicle emission has made great achievement. From 1980 to 2009, the pollution emission from automobiles had been on the increase, following the increasing population of automobiles. After 2000, the pollution emission from automobiles has been increasing slower, contributed by the implementation of stricter emission standards for motor vehicles and the elimination of high emission automobiles. It has been suggested in proposal on China’s 12th Five-year Plan that China will be active in tackling with the global climate change, and will adopt the binding target to greatly reduce energy consumption and emission of CO2, and to effectively control the greenhouse gas emission. Since vehicle exhaust emission has become the main source of China’s air pollution, China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection will make further efforts to improve environmental supervision on newly-produced motor vehicles or motor vehicles in use, and to reduce the overall pollution emission of motor vehicles.
According to relevant statistics, automobiles output and sales were 13.791 million sets and 13.645 million sets in China in 2009, up 48.3% and 46.2% respectively on a yearly basis. Automobile output is expected to exceed 15 million sets in 2010. Each automobile needs about 5 gram of platinum metals, which serve as the high-efficient catalyst in automobiles. China’s move to raise emission standards equals to improve utilization rate of platinum metals in automobiles, especially porpezite. It is generally a peak sales period of automobiles in December, January, February and March, and automobile producers usually build up stocks during these months. SMM expects price movement of platinum metals will be optimistic along with overall demand improvements.
