Successful Trials at Jinbei Aluminum Industry's 2nd Phase Alumina Project

SHANGHAI, Aug. 9 (SMM) -- Shanxi Luneng Jinbei Aluminum Industry Company's second phase alumina project is now producing aluminum hydroxide after successfully undergoing trials. Only seven days were needed for this production line to pass the trial operations, breaking the previous record of 10 days set by the first phase of the project. Other production lines of the second phase will come online gradually during 2H 2010. 

SMM believes Shanxi Luneng Jinbei Aluminum's new alumina project is a larger one of many new alumina projects under construction, and the company's new alumina capacity is expected to reach 1.6 million mt/yr in late 3Q 2010. Meanwhile, the commissioning of new alumina capacity in China is in full swing, and according to SMM data, China's new alumina capacity will reach 5 million mt/yr by 3Q 2010. SMM predicts alumina prices will then likely fall as the new alumina capacity comes online beginning in mid-September.
