Rio Tinto, AMG Metals & Materials Ink MoU for Low-Carbon Aluminum Project in India

Recently, global mining giant Rio Tinto announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with India's AMG Metals & Materials to jointly assess the feasibility of a low-carbon aluminum project in India. If the project proceeds successfully, it is expected to achieve an annual aluminum capacity of up to 1 million mt and an alumina production capacity of 2 million mt. The entire project will be powered by renewable wind and solar energy, supplemented by pumped hydro storage technology, to ensure the stability and sustainability of energy supply. Rio Tinto revealed that the initial phase of the project will explore the possibility of constructing an aluminum smelter with an annual capacity of 500,000 mt in a favorable region of India. According to available information, AMG Metals & Materials was registered by Anil Chalamalasetty and Mahesh Kolli, the founders of India's clean energy enterprise Greenko Group. Rio Tinto mentioned in its statement that as global demand for sustainable materials continues to rise, AMG will collaborate with the Greenko Group to research reliable renewable energy solutions, while Rio Tinto will focus on exploring commercial alumina solutions.
