China's power battery installations in March 2025 surge over 60% both YoY, MoM

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- In March 2025, China's power battery installation volume reached 56.6 GWh, marking a 62.3% surge from the previous month and a 61.8% soar year-on-year, according to the China Automotive Power Battery Industry Innovation Alliance ("CAPBIIA").

Of those, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries accounted for the lion's share, with 46.6 GWh installed—82.3% of the total—representing a month-on-month spike of 63.9% and a 97% surge year-on-year. In contrast, ternary lithium batteries recorded 10 GWh in installations, making up 17.7% of the total, with month-on-month growth of 55.2% but a year-on-year decline of 11.6%.

A total of 41 power battery companies had products installed in new energy vehicles (NEVs) during March, two more than in the same month last year. The top three, top five, and top ten battery makers contributed 40.5 GWh, 45.6 GWh, and 52.5 GWh, respectively, accounting for 71.7%, 80.6%, and 92.9% of the total installation volume. The top ten's share fell 3.1 percentage points from a year ago, suggesting a slight increase in market diversity.

From January to March, cumulative power battery installations in China reached 130.2 GWh, up 52.8% year-on-year. LFP batteries dominated with 105.2 GWh, or 80.8% of the total, up 93.6% compared to the same period last year. Ternary batteries, by contrast, saw their installation volume drop to 25 GWh, down 19% year-on-year and comprising 19.2% of the total.

In the first quarter, 46 battery manufacturers in China supplied products for NEVs, four more than the same period last year. The top three, five, and ten suppliers delivered 95.4 GWh, 107.4 GWh, and 121.7 GWh, respectively, accounting for 73.3%, 82.5%, and 93.5% of total installations.

March also saw a combined output of 118.3 GWh from power and other battery types, representing a month-on-month growth of 18% and a 54.3% leap from a year earlier.

In the first three months of the year, total battery output reached 326.3 GWh, up 74.9% year-on-year.

Battery sales in March climbed to 115.4 GWh, up 28.3% from February and 64.9% year-on-year. Of this, power battery sales stood at 87.5 GWh—75.8% of total sales—rising 30.7% month-on-month and 46.9% year-on-year.

For the January–March period, cumulative battery sales hit 285.8 GWh, up 73.7% year-on-year. Power batteries contributed 217.3 GWh, or 76% of the total, with sales up 51.3% year-on-year.

Battery exports totaled 23.0 GWh in March, increasing 8.8% month-on-month and 75.3% year-on-year, representing 19.9% of total monthly sales. Of this, power battery exports reached 13.9 GWh (60.5% of total exports), up 8.6% from February and 11.3% from the previous year.

Cumulatively, China exported 61.5 GWh of batteries in the first quarter, a 91.2% soar from the same period last year, accounting for 21.5% of total battery sales. Power batteries made up 37.8 GWh (61.4% of exports), up 21.5% year-on-year, while exports of other batteries surged to 23.7 GWh, representing 38.6% of total exports.
