According to SMM, Marcos Lima, the former CEO of Chilean mining giant Codelco, stated that potential US copper tariffs would only drive up consumer prices, as domestic producers cannot fill the supply gap. Lima noted that implementing such measures as part of protectionist policies to boost domestic copper production would be detrimental to the US. Lima is currently a founding partner of Santiago-based consulting firm CIS Consultores.
The US recently initiated a so-called Section 232 review on copper imports. Such investigations aim to determine the impact of any imports on US national security. Lima said via email last Friday: "The only thing that will happen is that US copper prices will rise. This country cannot increase production levels overnight.
