Pakistan's Pak Steel is considering an investment project to produce rebar and other steel products in Uzbekistan, with prospects for the joint venture discussed between Uzbekistan's Ambassador to Islamabad, Alisher Tukhtaev, and Pak Steel Director Hassan Farid. According to Farid, high electricity costs in Pakistan are weighing on production costs and competitiveness, prompting the company to consider Uzbekistan, where energy resources are more accessible, as a potential site for new production facilities. Other factors under consideration include available industrial zone infrastructure and investor incentives, with Pak Steel also expressing interest in participating in housing, hotel, dam, and transport infrastructure projects in the country.

Japan's JFE Steel expects its output to fall by about 600,000 tonnes after heavy rain in August and further flooding from Typhoon No. 25 in September damaged facilities at its East Japan Works in the Chiba area. The impact is expected to be prolonged, as the typhoon caused additional damage while the company was still working to return its blast furnace to normal operations following the earlier August flooding. Products affected by the production cut include flat-rolled steel, stainless steel, and iron powder made at the Chiba site, with certain deliveries already delayed. JFE said the estimate may change as restoration progresses and it continues assessing the impact on output and earnings. No injuries were reported. 유럽철강협회(EUROFER)가 발표한 추정치에 따르면, EU 배출권거래제(ETS) 개정안에 따라 유럽 철강 산업의 연간 탄소 비용은 2026년 약 34억 유로에서 2031년 약 82억 유로로 두 배 이상 증가할 수 있다. EUROFER는 무상 배출권이 단계적으로 축소됨에 따라 기존 고로 방식 철강의 탄소 비용이 2030년까지 톤당 약 100유로로 상승하고, 2031년부터는 톤당 200유로를 초과할 수 있다고 추정했다. 협회는 철강사들이 현재 계획된 탈탄소화 투자를 이행하더라도 이러한 비용 증가가 발생할 수 있다고 경고했다. EUROFER는 무상 배출권에서 EU 탄소국경조정제도(CBAM)로의 전환이 저렴한 저탄소 에너지의 가용성, 효과적인 탄소 누출 방지, 저탄소 철강 시장, 철 스크랩 접근성, 투자 지원과 연계되어야 한다고 촉구했다. 협회는 이러한 여건들이 EU 회원국 전역에 균일하게 갖춰지지 않을 것이라고 주장했다. 82억 유로라는 수치는 제안된 ETS 체계 하에서 EUROFER가 산정한 업계 추정치이며, 유럽연합 집행위원회의 공식 전망치는 아니다. 이 경고는 유럽 철강사들이 약한 수요와 더불어 증가하는 탈탄소화 비용에 직면하고, 기존 고로 생산에서 저배출 철강 생산으로의 전환 자금 조달 압박이 커지는 가운데 나왔다.
