Peru's Copper Production Declines in June, Eyes 3 Million Tonne Output for 2024 Despite Challenges

According to SMM, Peru's Ministry of Energy and Mines indicated that the country's copper production in June fell by 11.7% year-on-year to 213,578 tonnes. In the first six months of 2024, Peru's copper output reached 1.29 million tonnes, down 2.1% from the same period last year. Peru, which is the world's third-largest copper producer, has recently been surpassed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo to take the second spot. The Ministry stated that it expects production to reach 3 million tonnes this year, exceeding last year's figure of 2.76 million tonnes. At the beginning of last year, Peru's critical mining industry was hit by anti-government protests, leading to a decline in production. The country hopes to benefit from the Tia Maria copper mine project initiated by Southern Copper, which is now projected to commence operations in 2027 after more than a decade of stagnation due to opposition from local communities.
