According to foreign media reports, DuPont Electronics and Industry (DuPont Electronics & Industrial), German Steiner thin film company (Steinerfilm) and Polaris battery laboratory (Polaris Battery Labs) are working together to produce a battery with an energy density 26% higher than that of similar batteries made of traditional materials, but uses 80% less copper and aluminum. Increased energy density can increase the range of electric vehicles, make the realization of electric aircraft more feasible, and improve portable electronic devices. More importantly, as electric vehicles become more common, the technology can reduce reliance on rare metals such as copper and aluminum, which are necessary for other parts of electric vehicles. The copper consumption of electric vehicles is expected to increase to 4 million tons per year by 2040, and the technology could save millions of tons of copper.
The existing collector is made of heat-stable, high-strength DuPont Kapton polyimide film and metallized by Steiner film, so each side has 500nm metal with a total thickness of 5 microns, making it the lightest and thinnest collector in existing lithium-ion batteries, and only 17% aluminum and copper are used in ordinary electricity. The Polaris battery lab mixes such collectors with LCO cathodes, graphite anodes and electrolytes to produce a new battery that has a 26% higher energy density than batteries made of conventional aluminum and copper foil.
This major technological advance combines the expertise of three companies, all of which are members of the Soteria Battery Innovation Group (Soteria Battery Innovation Group) alliance, which aims to promote industry cooperation in advanced battery and safety technologies. At present, the alliance has more than 100 members, including NASA, Mercedes-Benz, Bosch, Motorola, Lenovo, DuPont, Applied Materials and so on. Alliance members use Soteria technology to develop and protect their business and enjoy technical achievements. Therefore, in this way, more than 100 companies can combine their expertise to achieve the safety of lithium-ion batteries.
Soteria's open innovation alliance and licensing architecture creates a center for the research and development of new technologies and an architecture that enables new technologies to be widely used in the battery industry. The materials used in the project will have a significant impact on the electric vehicle industry, reduce the amount of metal needed to support the electric vehicle industry, and make the entire value chain more environmentally friendly.
