Europe plans to achieve 80% of low-carbon electricity by 2030

SMM: Eurelectric, the European electricity industry association, said that by 2030, up to 80% of EU electricity will be fossil fuel-free, regardless of whether the European economy faces a long-term economic crisis or not.

Eurelectric represents the European National Power Association and the leading national power companies.

In the first half of this year, 2/3 of the EU's electricity was carbon-free. Renewable energy accounts for 40 per cent of the electricity structure, while fossil fuel generation fell 18 per cent year-on-year to 34 per cent, the report said. Ten years ago, renewable energy accounted for 20 per cent of the EU's electricity structure, compared with 34 per cent last year.

"this year, the power sector has proved its important value to society by providing clean and reliable electricity to hospitals, government agencies and millions of people who work from home," said Kristian Ruby, secretary-general of the Eurelectric.

He added: "in order to achieve the 2030 target, or even further, we must urgently remove obstacles and stimulate the development of low-carbon energy such as wind and solar energy. In order to achieve the EU's 2030 climate target, wind and solar capacity must be doubled. "

Recently, many projects have been delayed due to restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, and licensing programs are slowing down. In addition, the infrastructure of electric vehicles also needs to be promoted, and the growth of coal imports must stop.
