CME Group metals volume shoot up during May

Exchange operator CME Group reports that metals volume in May rose 13% year-on-year to 540,000 contracts, compared to 479,000 in May 2016.

NEW YORK (Scrap Register): Exchange operator CME Group reports that metals volume in May rose 13% year-on-year to 540,000 contracts, compared to 479,000 in May 2016.
Sequentially, however, volume last month was down 1.5% from an average of 548,000 lots in April. Average daily volume in gold futures and options increased 3% year-on-year to 334,000 contracts, while this jumped 52% in silver to 94,000 contracts.
On a rolling three-month average basis, CME Group reports that average daily metals volume was 525,000 contracts for the period ending with May.
This was up from 519,000 for the three-month period ending with April, 512,000 for the period ending with March and 466,000 for the period ending with February.

Last Friday, the most-traded SHFE copper 2610 contract opened at 108,660 yuan/mt, rose to an intraday high of 108,830 yuan/mt in early trading, then drifted lower to an intraday low of 108,350 yuan/mt, and finally closed at 108,440 yuan/mt, down 0.50%. Trading volume reached 37,000 lots, and open interest reached 193,000 lots, a decrease of 5,979 lots from the previous trading day, driven by bullish liquidation.

EU의 고철 수출 정책이 또 한 번 중요한 전환점을 맞았다. 인도, 태국, 말레이시아가 금속 폐기물을 다루는 유럽연합 집행위원회의 평가 초안에서 환경 요건을 충족하지 못해, 새로운 폐기물 운송 규정이 발효되면 해당 국가들이 영향을 받는 EU 고철을 직접 수입하지 못할 가능성이 생겼다. 폐기물 운송 규정에 따라 비OECD 국가로의 비유해 폐기물 수출은 목적지와 특정 폐기물 흐름이 승인되지 않는 한 2027년 5월 21일부터 전면 금지된다. 집행위원회의 첫 최종 목록은 2026년 11월 21일까지 마련될 예정이어서 구리 고철 금지 조치는 아직 확정되지 않았다.
