SMM Price Outlook for Base Metals on SHFE (Apr. 26, 2017)

Freeport’s two copper smelters in Gresik, Indonesia, have resumed production. PT Smelting, with copper cathode capacity of around 342,000 t/y, has returned to normal operations after a roughly two-week shutdown for furnace repairs in August. Meanwhile, the Manyar smelter resumed concentrate feeding in August and is expected to produce copper cathode in September. PTFI expects combined cathode output from the two smelters to approach 400,000 tonnes this year. As Indonesian refined copper production recovers and the COMEX-LME price spread narrows sharply, tightness in the ex-U.S. refined copper market has eased. The LME cash-to-three-month copper spread has consequently fallen from a backwardation of more than US$500/t in mid-August to a contango of around US$86/t by mid-September, signaling a significant easing in immediate spot supply tightness.

SMM 시장 조사에 따르면, 인도네시아 그레식에 위치한 PT 스멜팅 구리 제련소는 8월 설비 문제로 생산을 일시 중단했다. 수리 작업에는 약 2주가 소요되었으며, 현재 제련소는 정상 가동 수준으로 복귀했다. 공시 자료에 따르면 PT 스멜팅은 8월 8일부터 노 보수를 위해 가동을 중단했다. PT 프리포트 인도네시아가 66%, 미쓰비시 머티리얼즈가 34%의 지분을 보유한 이 시설은 구리 음극 생산 능력을 약 34만 2천 톤/년, 정광 처리 능력을 약 130만 톤/년으로 확장했다. 일시 가동 중단 기간 동안 프리포트는 선적 일정을 조정하고 신규 마냐르 제련소의 재가동을 앞당겼다. PT 스멜팅이 정상 가동 수준으로 복귀하고 마냐르가 8월 정광 투입, 9월 음극 생산을 재개함에 따라 그레식에 위치한 프리포트의 두 구리 제련 시설 모두 생산을 재개했다. 다만 마냐르는 여전히 램프업 단계에 있으며, 가동률은 그라스베르그 블록 케이브 광산의 정광 공급 회복에 크게 좌우된다.
