AUSTIN (Scrap Monster): The City of Dallas has awarded a 15-year contract to Spanish Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas (FCC) to handle all of city’s waste. The $300 million contract includes building and operating the new recycling facility for the above mentioned period.
The Dallas’ Sanitation Services Department had announced a tender, to which six companies had responded. From the six participating companies, FCC was selected on account of its adherence to technical criteria specified by the tender. According to terms of the contract, FCC will have exclusive rights to the recyclable waste from all the containers in the City of Dallas during the original contract period of 15 years. The contract allows for extension up to 10 years based on certain criteria.
According to FCC, the construction of the new recycling facility is expected to begin in January next year. The facility is expected to become operational by January 2017. The facility will feature an automatic sorting plant with state-of-the-art sorting machines employing the latest technology. The plant will be capable of sorting all the single-stream recycling waste into various categories such as glass, plastics, metals etc. The new facility will enhance the state’s recycling tonnage, thereby helping the city to achieve the 40% recycling target set for 2020.
