【SMM Steel】Most Mexican goods exempt from US forced labor tariff plan

Published: Jun 9, 2026 17:35
【SMM Steel】The USTR has proposed a 10% tariff on imports from Mexico and 13 other economies following a Section 301 investigation on forced labor enforcement. Mexico confirmed after consultations with USTR that goods meeting USMCA rules of origin (about 85% of its exports) are exempt. Products already under Section 232 orders (autos, steel, aluminum) are also excluded. The tariff will not take effect immediately, with a 45-day consultation period ahead. Talks over the remaining 15% of exports will continue. The Section 301 investigation is seen as part of a broader US strategy to replace tariffs previously struck down or expiring.
