Cao Desheng, director of the Maritime Safety Bureau of the Ministry of Transport, said at the press conference that at present, most of our ships use traditional power fuels, that is, fossil energy fuels. after these fuels are burned, they will produce air pollutants such as sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides and particulates, which will have a certain impact on air quality. Especially in the port city, if there are more large ships docking, it will have a great impact on the air quality in the local area.
Cao Desheng said that in the next step, the Ministry of Transport will continue to strengthen the capacity building of monitoring and supervision, strictly implement the relevant regulations and policies on the discharge of air pollution from ships, improve the collection mechanism of ship energy consumption data, adapt to the development of new forms of technology related to water, promote the application of batteries, clean fuels, and renewable energy on ships, and actively create a demonstration zone for maritime governance of green shipping. Guide ships to use clean, green and low-carbon energy to promote institutional and technical emission reduction.
At the beginning of this year, EVTank, together with Ivie Economic Research Institute and China Battery Industry Research Institute, jointly released the White Paper on the Development of China's Electric Shipping Industry (2021). Statistics show that in 2020, shipments of lithium-ion batteries for electric ships in China reached 75.6 Mwhr, an increase of 94.8 percent over the same period last year. In 2020, the market size of lithium-ion batteries for electric ships in China was 95 million yuan, an increase of 67.1 percent over the same period last year.
Wu Hui, president of China Battery Industry Research Institute and general manager of the research department of Yiwei Economic Research Institute, said that marine batteries have put forward higher requirements for their safety performance, rate performance, long life, battery package protection grade, etc., especially for the ship's 30-year life cycle equipped with long-cycle battery system, so all battery enterprises need to be certified by the China Classification Society. Wu Hui said: from the perspective of research and investigation, at present, more than a dozen domestic enterprises, including Ningde era, Yiwei Lithium Energy, Guoxuan Hi-Tech, Penghui Energy, and Xingying Technology, have obtained corresponding certifications.
According to the statistics of EVTank, domestic marine lithium batteries are mainly supplied by Yiwei Lithium Energy and Ningde Times in 2020, and the two companies have a combined market share of more than 80%. In addition, Guoxuan, Yijiatong and other enterprises also have certain shipments of marine battery systems.
Wu Hui also said that lithium-ion batteries are not the only marine batteries, including fuel cells and supercapacitors will be used separately or mixed in future electric ships, gradually replacing diesel as marine energy. In addition, there are still some problems in the development of electric ships, such as the standard system is not unified, the business model is not clear, the port shore power construction is backward and so on.
