SHANGHAI, Mar. 10 (SMM) – China’s bauxite imports fell 20% on the month to 2,587,823 tonnes in January 2015, customs data showed.

Imports from Australia and Malaysia – China’s major suppliers – fell 330,664 tonnes and 367,632 tonnes, respectively, from a month ago, the major reason behind the month-on-month decline in total imports. Expensive Australia ore cools China’s appetite.

Inbound shipment tumbled 67% from a year ago when huge volumes of Indonesian ore continued to arrive ahead of the export ban.

It’s worth noting that China began to source bauxite from the Solomon Islands, importing over 40,000 mt from the country.
