Peruvian President refuses to cancel Mining license for Tia Maria Project opponents say they will continue to protest

SMM7 17-Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday rejected a request from local officials to cancel construction permits for the Tia Maria copper project within 72 hours.

Officials in Arequipa province, where the Tia Maria project is based, say local communities plan to continue protests and carefully examine the feasibility of challenging permits through legal means.

Opponents of the project had previously said there would be an indefinite strike until the permit was revoked. Because they think the project will disrupt local agricultural production and pollute water sources, although Southern Copper (Southern Copper) has plans to build a desalination plant, they are still opposed.

At least six people have been killed in protests against the project over the past decade. So about 400 police officers have been sent to the area to prevent possible violence.

Southern Copper (Southern Copper) also said it would not start building the mine if it could not reach an agreement with the local community.
