La Corporación de Comercialización de Minerales de Zimbabue (MMCZ) registró 18 casos de presunto contrabando de minerales y movimiento irregular de minerales entre enero y el 20 de agosto de 2026, que abarcan un total de 2.654,88 toneladas de material mineral y chatarra metálica. El litio, el cromo y la sílice dominaron el registro de casos, según la primera Actualización del Mercado de Contabilidad y Vigilancia de Recursos Minerales de la MMCZ. El mayor elemento individual fue un acopio de 1.500 toneladas de concentrado de cromo en Darwendale, puesto bajo embargo mientras continúan las investigaciones, lo que representa más de la mitad de todo el tonelaje señalado durante el período examinado. Los casos restantes abarcaron 1.154,88 toneladas. La directora general de la MMCZ, Dra. Un arancel estadounidense del 12,5 % por trabajo forzoso sobre los productos sudafricanos entró en vigor el 24 de julio de 2026 y, a diferencia de los productos siderúrgicos acabados, el ferrocromo no recibió ninguna exclusión del gravamen. El acero acabado se beneficia de una exención vinculada a los aranceles existentes al acero en virtud de la Sección 232, pero el ferrocromo, clasificado como insumo de aleación y no como artículo siderúrgico acabado, nunca ha estado comprendido en ese programa, por lo que queda plenamente expuesto al nuevo arancel.
