Chile's Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the lower court's decision to conduct a new environmental assessment of the Norte Abierto gold and copper project, a joint venture between Barrick and Newmont.

The dispute concerns the potential impact of mining projects on nearby indigenous communities.

The mining complex, located in the northern part of Atacama, was created in 2017 after the merger of the independent Cerro Casale mine owned by Barrick and the Caspiche mine owned by Newmont Goldcorp into a joint venture.

The Norte Abierto complex was approved in 2019 following the submission of an environmental impact report, which seeks to authorize minor changes to the project.

According to the company's data, the, Norte Abierto project has proven and possible reserves of 2320 million ounces of gold and 5.8 billion pounds of copper.
