According to foreign media reports, SK On, a subsidiary of South Korea's SKI, is considering entering the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery business in the near future.
It is understood that before SK On mainly manufactured ternary and quaternary lithium batteries and other products, mainly in the form of soft package packaging.
Foreign media reported that, SKI CEO said in an interview with the media on October 5: "We are considering the development of LFP batteries." Although its capacity density is low, it has advantages in terms of cost and thermal stability. "
SKI is a world-class battery giant, currently ranking fifth in the world and second in the Korean market.
The return of the King of Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery
The latest data show that among the power batteries matched by the ten bev models from January to August, lithium iron phosphate batteries are matched in seven of them, and even Biadihan, who ranks fourth among them, is all equipped with lithium iron phosphate batteries.
The first ten bev models from January to August are Hongguang mini (219869), Tesla Model 3 (93156), Tesla Model Y (60603), BYD Han (45374), Euler R1 (43019), AION.S (41415), Mercedes-Benz (40540), Chery eQ1 (39678), Xiaopeng P7 (31505) and Roewe Clever (25017).
Hongguang mini, Tesla Model 3, Tesla Model Y, BYD Han, Benz, Chery eQ1, Xiaopeng P7 and other models are equipped with lithium iron phosphate batteries.
Overall, the output of lithium iron phosphate batteries from January to August totaled 58.1GWH, accounting for 52.1% of the total output, an increase of 301.8% over the same period last year.
In fact, from January to May, the annual output of lithium iron phosphate batteries has exceeded that of ternary batteries. In the following June to August, lithium iron phosphate batteries produced more than ternary batteries.
In 2021, the output of lithium iron phosphate batteries will exceed that of ternary batteries.
In addition, from the point of view of the loading capacity, the loading capacity of lithium iron phosphate batteries has exceeded that of ternary batteries in July, and there is a tendency to expand again in August: in August, lithium iron phosphate batteries loaded a total of 7.2GWhh, while ternary batteries loaded only 5.3GWh.In that month, the loading capacity of lithium iron phosphate batteries was 135.85% of that of ternary batteries!
The status of SKI
Market data show that SKI October 13, 1962, the predecessor of SKI "Korean Petroleum" was established, at first, South Korea's first oil refining company, headquartered in Seoul, South Korea.
After more than 50 years of development, SKI has gone through six stages of development. now SKI has six subsidiaries, which is "the first large-scale energy and chemical enterprise in Korea" and "a global energy and chemical enterprise covering oil refining, chemistry, lubricants, petroleum development, batteries and information electronic materials".
In the new energy industry, SKI dabbled in as early as 25 years ago. SKI developed the first lithium-ion battery in 1996. As an energy company, we have nearly 60 years of experience and about 30 years of experience in battery manufacturing and commercialization. SKI pioneered the first high-nickel battery, and we produce market-leading long batteries, fast charging technology, next-generation modules and battery separators. "
In terms of the power batteries needed for electric vehicles, SKI started the business of lithium-ion batteries for hybrid electric vehicles in 2005 and has been in production since 2006. "
In 2010, SKI became the designated supplier of BlueOn and Kia Ray, South Korea's first all-electric car, and two years later "supplied batteries to SLS AMG E-Cell, Mercedes-AMG's first all-electric car".
In terms of time, SKI entered the power battery market even earlier than the Ningde era (Ningde era was established in 2011).
In the latest ranking of global power battery loads from January to August in 2021, SKI ranks fifth in terms of 3.7GWh 's power battery load, while in the South Korean market, it only lags behind LG New Energy, ranking second.
SKI's goal is to become the company with the largest number of cars installed in the world.
To achieve this goal, SKI announced in early July that it would spin off the battery business and go public independently; SKI also launched a program called "1 Terawatt + α." It plans to invest 30 trillion won ($26.5 billion, about 171.2 billion yuan) within five years to "shift its business from carbon emissions to green (energy business)".
SKI's plan is to increase power battery capacity to 200GWhh by 2025, surpassing 500GWh by 2030.
Write at the end
LG New Energy, which ranks second in the world, began developing lithium iron phosphate battery technology at the end of last year at Daejeon Laboratory in South Korea, and is expected to build a pilot line in 2022 at the earliest. It is reported that the lithium iron phosphate battery of LG new energy is packaged in a soft package.
Now, SKI, which ranks fifth in the world, is also entering lithium iron phosphate batteries.
So far, among the top five power battery companies in the world (Ningde era, LG New Energy, Panasonic, BYD, SKI), only Panasonic has not announced to enter the lithium iron phosphate battery.
It is worth noting that Panasonic, which does not produce lithium iron phosphate batteries, its market share is gradually slipping!
